It's almost time for the challenge to begin! YAY!

By now, I'm assuming you've got your products made that you're entering into the challenge. If not, HURRY! The time to submit them is almost here!

That's right, don't forget that your product listings need to go live in your shop THIS WEDNESDAY - October 5th. If you've already got your listing ready & saved it as a draft, great!

Also, don't forget to tag your products with "EMCPC". This is the key to entering your product in the challenge. This is how our treasury curator will know which listings to include in the treasuries & also how voting will take place.

Once you make your listings live, you're not done! Remember to promote the challenge on your social network sites & blog about this challenge. You want as many people coming to vote in the challenge as possible. That gives you a better chance of getting your awesome products voted for! Tell us about yourself!
My name is Katie and I live in Louisville, Kentucky with my husband of eight years, Josh, and our two little girls. Our oldest, Miriam, is five and just started kindergarten. Our youngest, Leah Rose, just turned two. I've worked in customer service at a local bank for the past ten years.

What makes you unique?
I am admittedly a bit of a geek (I'm a ridiculously huge fan of Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings, two things that get me teased constantly at work!) who also loves fashion, clothes and accessorizing. I went to see the second-to-last-installment in the Harry Potter movie series wearing skinny jeans, ruby red high heels and a Hogwarts t-shirt. I try to keep my jewelry designs light and whimsical, too, and not take things too seriously.

What do you love about kids?
There is never a dull moment around my house. One of my favorite things to do is just sit and listen to my girls play together. Leah is now old enough to really play with Miriam -they are constantly playing pretend and they create their own little worlds. I like to listen in and hear how creative they are. They are also hilarious -Miriam will tell you she "doesn't care for pizza" while yesterday Leah said to me "you not Katie -you my mommy!" I love watching these two interesting little girls grow into themselves more and more everyday.

What are you currently doing besides your shop crafts?
Miriam and I craft together all the time. We make clothes for her dolls, soap and we've recently started "rhinestoning," a crafting pastime my sister introduced me to which is basically bedazzling anything that will sit still long enough (today I made myself a Halloween koozie). I also make headbands with feathers and sequins. On my ever-expanding lists of things to do is to take a bead weaving class and also learn how to knit. I've had knitting needles and yarn in my closet for almost two years but I'm determined to learn someday!

What do you offer in your etsy shop?
I make jewelry, primarily earrings. I also make necklaces, bracelets, and the occasional ring. I do create wine charms, too, and soon I'll be offering embellished bobby pins. The vast majority of my jewelry is made with beads, although I also work with glass charms and I've recently discovered how much fun flower cabochons are.

Where do you create?
I work at my dining room table. I have two plastic bins full of my beading supplies that sit on a card table in the corner of my dining room. I dream of having my own actual studio someday but I love my dining room -it's the sunniest room in my house and my table is big enough for me to really spread everything out and work.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I've always been a girly girl. When I was little I loved playing dress up with my grandma's vintage jewelry. I still find inspiration in vintage designs -I love to wander in antique malls, inspecting vintage necklaces and brooches. I've recently started taking some of these necklaces apart and refashioning them into more modern necklaces as well as earrings.
I love looking at fashion magazines, too, although I've certainly cut back my subscriptions in recent years. I used to subscribe to about 10 different monthly magazines but now I only get a few. I still get lots of catalogs, though, and I like to sit down with them and see what's trendy and then try to create things that follow the trends but with my own unique interpretation.
I love to read and watch movies and some of my designs are inspired by my favorite characters from books and movies. I try not to be too literal in my interpretations, though, and keep things subtle.

How did you get started in your current line of business?
I started making jewelry when Leah was a baby -she took two naps a day and I hated to sit Miriam down in front of the TV every time she was asleep but it was hard to find quiet things to do during those times. So we started crafting together. Within six months, I was giving everyone I knew jewelry all the time and I finally decided to open an Etsy shop and see if I could make a little money.

How do you promote your business?
I mainly promote through my Facebook page, www.facebook.com/AdelleRose0609 and word of mouth through friends and family.

What is one of the most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?
You have to be patient and not expect everything to happen overnight. Also, try to connect with other people through teams and treasury making. Etsy is a great community, everyone I've encountered has been so kind -I love it!

What advice would you give someone just starting out?
I'd reference that patience again! Get your name out there, join teams, start a Facebook page and don't get discouraged if you aren't selling 10 items a day. Have fun and enjoy what you're doing.

What are some of your favorite online shops, both etsy and non-etsy?
It's really hard to pick my favorite Etsy shops because there are so many great ones out there! I especially love Girl 216 Designs, Zias Cottage Industry, em and sprout, and lkfarnsworth. Off Etsy, I am a hopeless Target junkie and I can find just about anything I need on Amazon.

Time's Up!

Time's up! Friday was the deadline to enter your shop into the EtsyMom Fall event - The Color Palette Challenge.

So participating shops...listen up, because here's the recap on what you need to do!

You've got until October 5th to make items that will go into your shop using one of the color palettes shown in the event kickoff post. Click here if you need to see them again. You can enter two items into the challenge.
Once your items are made & photographed, you're going to list them in your shop as a DRAFT listing. Be sure your first photo rocks since that's what people are going to see in the treasuries.
You'll then make your listings live on October 5th!!! Remember to tag your listing with"EMCPC" in order for your entries to count!

That's it! Simple! Your job is done! Well almost...there's that promoting thing.

Remember that there will be a first, second, & third place winner chosen from all of the entries. Winners are chosen based on how many votes their listing receives so it's your job to hype this event up to all of your fans & followers. You want them to come & vote for you right??

Well, yes...sort of. We want them to come & vote based on the items. This isn't a popularity contest so please, when your asking people to come vote, don't ask them to specifically come & vote for your item...ask them to come & vote in the challenge you're participating in. Let's work hard on making our products great for the event. May the best woman win!

Well here's the deal.

The EtsyMom Team has a new event coming up up in October that's just for you. You don't have to do anything you don't already do & you're going to have the chance to win free stuff.

Are you ready?

Yep! That's right! We're hosting a color palette challenge for all you EtsyMom Team members & it's going to be a blast!

Before I tell you about the challenge...

You're going to sign up by clicking here & filling out this form. - You've got until September 16th to register your shop.
Once you're registered, you've got until October 5th to make items that will go into your shop using one of the color palettes below per item. You can enter two items into the challenge. The color palettes are based off of Pantone's Fashion Color Report for 2011 so your items will be using trendy colors!
Once your items are made & photographed, you're going to list them for sale in your shop, but DON'T make the listing live until October 5th!!! You'll need to tag your listing with "EMCPC" in order for your entries to count & remember...you want that first photo to rock since that's what people are going to see in the treasuries.
Treasuries of all participating shop's items will be made & posted to the blog on October 10th.
Voting will run from October 10th to October 14th. Anyone can vote, so spread the word!
There will be a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place winner based on the number of votes each item receives. Ties will be decided via random.org. Winners will be announced on the blog on October 17th.
If you are a winner, you'll have your choice of a free item from one of our sponsor shops. 1st place chooses first, then 2nd, then 3rd.

EtsyMom Team Newsletter: Issue 10 - August

Welcome to another amazing issue of the EtsyMom Team Newsletter! We have one quick announcement before continuing on. We're making some team changes! Come this fall, we will no longer gather at socialgo.com, the site we have been using as our private forum. We will instead have everything right here at etsymom.com! The newsletter format will be changing, the EMCA will be located right here, the Marvelous Mom will continue to be posted, and we have many more amazing opportunities coming. We're in the building stage so if you have any questions or comments, we'd love to hear them! Send an email to etsymomteam@gmail.com. And now, sit back, relax and enjoy our great content!

SPECIAL EVENTS

The Special Events Committee is in the process of planning a fun new event for all you EtsyMoms out there! This event will be for the fall season, and it's going to tap into your creative sides! Are you ready?

It's going to be the Fall Color Palette Challenge! If you've not participated in a color palette challenge before, don't miss this one! More details to come to all EtsyMom sites soon, but here's an overview of what you need to know. You create something using the colors on the fall color palette that will be provided, your creations are put up on the blog for all to see, votes are taken (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place), winners are announced, and prizes are won! Pretty simple.

Again, keep an eye out for more details on this event coming soon!

The EtsyMom Team participated in the 4th Annual Etsy "Christmas in July" (CIJ) Sale. From July 14th through the 24th, close to 80 shops joined in the fun and offered some awesome deals, and committee members promoted this event to boost the team's visibility. We loved how the dedicated CIJ EMCA worked out, and appreciate the support from that committee. Thanks to everyone for an awesome team effort!

During the last couple of months, the Special Events and Social Networking Committees have merged into what is currently the Special Events and Promotions Committee. We are still defining the roles of this new group and would ask all those who are signed up as "members" on socialgo to stay tuned for some important updates!

We had a great Christmas in July themed EMCA. All of our treasuries really helped drive visits to participating shops.

We are so excited to introduce the EtsyMom Curator Award - an award that will honor the dedication of one EtsyMom each month! The recipient will be the EtsyMom who helps to promote the team as a whole by curating the most EtsyMom team treasuries in a one month period! We will also be acknowledging each and every team treasury as well as the EtsyMom who curates it here, on the EtsyMom blog!

If you have not made a treasury before, and need help creating your first treasury, please let us know. We will be happy to help.

The big holiday shopping season is here, and we want to promote EtsyMom as a team to get our name out there and encourage others to buy handmade products from hard working, talented and dedicated moms. We think that a great way to start off is by encouraging all EtsyMoms to curate EtsyMom team treasuries. We have quite a few members - what a huge impact it would have on promoting EtsyMom! Many people check the treasuries often, and I know that some shop directly from them.

This is how the EMCA will work:

* Each EtsyMom who curates an EtsyMom TEAM treasury will submit a link to their treasury link here in this thread: EMCA - EtsyMom Curator Award
* Every single team treasury will get a screenshot (picture) posted to the EtsyMom Curator Award Blog as well as a thank you with a link directly to the curator’s shop.
* The EtsyMom who curates the most treasuries in a one month period will be the recipient of the EMCA, which is comprised of four parts: the winner’s shop’s EtsyMini will be posted on our team blog for one month as a thank you for helping to support the team, a special button will be made and posted on the team blog and team member's blogs, there will be a Marvelous Mom feature of them and they will also get to choose a prize from one of that month’s sponsors.

The rules:

* The sponsors for the month CANNOT be winners for that month
* The same person cannot win two awards in a row.
* In order for your treasury to count, you must use only EtsyMom items, and mention "EtsyMom" either in your treasury title or description so it’s easily identified as an EtsyMom treasury.

ETSY TIPS

Shipping

If there is one area that I strive to improve, it’s shipping. I feel like I spend half my week going to and from the post office. Here are some great shipping tips from fellow Etsy sellers.

1. Use the shipping labels available from Paypal. You can either print out an individual order or multi-order labels. You will need to know the weight of the items being shipped before you can do this, so invest in a shipping scale.

2. You can schedule carrier pickups through usps.com or through Paypal. This will cut down on the unnecessary trips to the post office.

3. Did you know that USPS Priority boxes are FREE?! They will even deliver them to your door. You can visit their online store (www.usps.com) for more information.

4. Buy shipping supplies in bulk and stock up ahead of time. Doing so will prevent you from having to overpay for these supplies at the post office.

5. If you are shipping internationally, keep your receipt with the customs number information. It can help a little if things go awry, as you'll be able to show the buyer prof that you shipped the item.

6. The USPS isn’t always the best option, especially if you have large packages. Check out UPS and Fedex; they may offer a better shipping rate.

Back-to-School Drawstring Backpack

I thought this backpack tutorial might come in handy, as many Etsy Moms are prepping for back-to-school.This is a fun project and should take under an hour to complete. These handy backpacks can be folded up so they take up no room in a gym bag or larger school backpack and come out when needed for gym clothes or to tote a ball to practice.This is a great project for using up your fabric scraps.

Fabric: Nylon fabric (used in this example) is great because it wipes clean easily and is durable.Cotton prints or solids look great,too; just make sure to prewash cotton fabric. The backpack in this example is sized to hold a pair of gym shoes or a soccer ball.

Items needed:
• Pins
• Scissors and Rotary cutter
• Chalk
• Thread to match your fabric
• .5 yard of fabric (if fabric width is 40 inches or more)
• 2 eyelets or grommets
• Eyelet or grommet tool, I use 5/8" eyelets in this example.
• 4 yards of cording, cut into two 2 yard pieces, knot on one end
• 4 inch square of interfacing (optional)

Let’s Begin:

Set tension to high setting (I use 7.5) and presser foot should be almost on highest setting, between 3 and 4.

1) Cut two pieces of fabric 15x19.5 inches. Cut a 4 inch square from interfacing,then cut on the diagonal to create two triangles. Interfacing triangles will be used to reinforce inner bottom backpack corners.

2) With right sides of fabric facing out and leaving 3 inches open at top of both sides, pin both pieces of fabric together along bottom and sides. Mark a “notch” in both sides 3/8 inches in from outside edge and 3 inches down from top. Your chalk marks will create an L shape (see drawing). Following your chalk marks, trim a notch in both top corners. You are cutting through two layers of fabric at once to ensure fabric will line up properly when sewn together. Your fabric will now look like this:

3) Fold both top edges down two 1/4 inch turns and pin as shown, sew both edges catching all three layers of fabric and removing pins as you go.

4) Fold each of the four notched outside edges in two 1/4 inch turns, pin to secure, and sew straight stitch reinforcing at start and end of stitching.

5) Next sew a 1/4 inch seam along left and right sides and the bottom of fabric, top will be open.
It will now look like this:

6) Fold both top edges down toward inside 1 inch and pin. Sew a continuous straight stitch all the way around the drawstring casing following the line of stitching you created earlier. Remove pins as you go. (Change tension to 6 and presser foot to 2 1/2 at thickest part of casing.)

7) Turn backpack inside out. Finished drawstring casing seam looks like this.

Finishing Up:

8) Did you turn your backpack inside out? Great! Press your finger along the inside edge of fabric so the seam is tight. If you used cotton fabric, iron fabric to ensure you catch the inside seam when you create a 5/8 inch seam next. Okay, now pin interfacing corners as shown on bottom corners of backpack. You will be sewing over them when you sew a 5/8 inch seam along sides and bottom, so pin them close enough to the outside edge so you will catch them in your seam.

9) Sew 5/8 inch seam along bottom and sides. Softly curve your stitching outward (see below) as you come toward the casing at the top on each side, use care not to stitch over casing opening.Stop stitching and reinforce seam just before you reach casing.

10) Now, turn backpack right side out. Open the backpack and on the seam perpendicular to the casing holes for the drawstring, use a zigzag stitch up and down for 1 inch on the seam to reinforce this seam.

11) Next, use chalk to trace a line on the edge of the interfacing on the diagonal across each corner. Sew just below this line to finish the reinforced corners. Chalk line disappears easily by gently rubbing with a towel or a damp cloth.
You are almost done!

12) Lay backpack flat. Knot one end of each piece of drawstring (it will be easier to thread through the backpack casing this way). Thread the knotted end through one hole on the left side and then out the right side and back in the other hole on the right side, bringing the drawstring out the left side of the casing next to the insertion point. You have pulled it through a full circle.Pull ends even, unknot end,and thread both cord ends through eyelet, securing ends together in a knot.Do the same thing with the other piece of cord but insert it into the casing hole on the right side of the backpack, ending on the right side.

13) At bottom corners, measure in about 1 inch from the side and bottom and place a chalk mark on the same point in each corner. Using your eyelet tool, pierce the corner. I use a sharp scissor to make a tiny snip in this hole to make it easier to insert the eyelet. Insert the eyelet piece with the taller/higher mid-section and place a short eyelet piece over it. Insert the eyelet tool so the tip is poking up through the eyelet.Catch the top piece of the eyelet roundly as you come down and firmly press on the eyelet tool. You can flip your eyelet tool and press again to finish off any rough edges. This is worth practicing on a scrap of fabric if you haven’t done it before so you end up with a nice eyelet on your finished product.

14) Insert drawstring ends through corresponding eyelet and tie both ends in a knot together, secure tightly. Drawstring cord ends can be finished nicely with heat, use caution and read more online before attempting it for the first time.

There are many ways to vary this project.If you don’t have any eyelets or grommets, or haven’t used them before, you can sew the drawstrings into the corner seams or create a small tab protruding from both corners to thread the cord through.

My name is Holly and I am a 32-year-old WAHM, with a boy of 11, Gabriel, and a girl of 4, Emma. They are my entire world, and selling on Etsy is my sideline...

What do you create/offer in your Etsy shop?

I design and create mostly mid-century vintage-inspired accessories and jewelry, with some unique clothing items thrown in.

How did you get started in your line of business?

Professionally, I work in graphic design/product development. After a difficult last pregnancy and my daughter's minor health problems, I decided to leave the 9 to 5 and do freelance graphic design from home. I had also wanted to learn to sew, and I was able to throw myself into it. I was able to make clothing and accessories I liked and that were unique, without paying custom prices. Win-win! I had so many ladies asking me where I got my dress/purse, etc., that I decided to make them for sale and list them online.

Describe your creative process

When an idea strikes, I grab my sketchpad and a calculator. I'll work out an overall of the product, size, materials, and unique features visually. Then I go into detail sketching a pattern for the piece and working out sizes, pockets, folds, and construction. Then I shop for materials, and I time myself while making one to gauge if this will be a viable item; will someone pay what I need them to pay to cover materials and time, and still make a profit? If not, it's back to the drawing board.

Where to you find your inspiration?

I am a retro-loving girl, so for inspiration, I check out eBay, the Vintage Pattern Wiki, vintage pattern shops, Flickr streams, vintage blogs, movies, and more for vintage fashions, sewing pattern art, and scans from vintage magazines and books. Vintage Fashion is full of details that you won't find in anything mass-manufactured today, which is a great inspiration in itself: Remember, it’s all in the details. I love vintage, but I do have a modern side, and I like to mix retro prints with more modern or edgier items, for the girl who isn't comfortable in full retro, but just wants to add a touch to a modern ensemble.

What’s your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

My new favorite item is not yet in my shop, so stay tuned, but I would say the Swiss Army Clutch in Red Hawaiian. It has such a fantastic 50s tropical vibe, that it's perfect for this summer's wardrobe.

How do you promote your work?

I have fallen off of the promotion wagon this busy summer, but once I get back into the swing of things, I'll promote regularly using the various social media, through Etsy Showcase spots, and through blog features like this; periodically offering discounts or giveaways for extra exposure during key retail periods.

What’s one of the most important lessons you’ve learned since starting your Etsy shop?

I've learned that promotion is really a full-time job. I have seen the great results from a full-on well-thought-out campaign, and the lackluster sales when you let yourself take a break from it (like this summer!). Any business that takes off without a lot of work is a fluke, and likely will not last. Be patient. The time you invest will pay off!

What advice would you give to someone starting out?

1. Do something that you really love. Almost always , if you are just “meh” about doing a product but can make money from it, you will eventually hate doing it anyway and sputter out. On the other side, if you love making hair do-dads more than anything in the world, but have to price them below cost just to compete in the hair do-dad market, you will eventually go broke. Find a balance. Find a fun-to-make and unique product that will return not only your monetary investment, but also pay you for your time and and allow you to make a profit besides. Hint: Just being paid for your time is not profit.

2. Do your homework.
Now that you know what you completely love making, do your homework. Find the cost of the materials of your item; don't forget to add in thread or interfacing. Add to this the cost of packaging materials like tissue paper, box, and even strapping tape. You can charge an hourly rate and add up your time or set a base fee for making. This will roughly be your wholesale. Double that for retail. Will it sell for this price? Who else is selling a comparable item and how much are they charging? Are there a lot of comparable items out there for sale? Maybe the market is over-saturated already? Be prepared to start over and don't give up!

Tell us about yourself

I am blessed with a wonderful husband and 3 beautiful children. Eleanor is my oldest and the inspiration for much of my crafting and love for books. Henry is in the middle, a rambunctious toddler with a zest for life who keeps me on my toes. George is my newest addition, just a few months old but already full of big grins and bubbly personality. When I'm not playing house you'll either find me working (I'm a dietitian) or at church growing in grace.

What makes you unique?

I have an eye for beautiful things. I used to think what I could do best was find and buy the best gifts for everyone. It took me a long time to realize I could make things myself. When I decided to design birth announcements and other art prints, I didn't want to use other people's artwork. Almost all of the images in my shop were created by me.

What do you love about kids?

I love that kids are like sponges, soaking up everything around them. I taught my daughter to use Adobe Illustrator and now she is teaching me how to do things on it I would have never learned on my own! My kids are very inventive.

Kids also seem to have an endless supply of faith. Oh that I could have the same in such abundance!

What are you currently doing besides your shop crafts?

I spend a lot of time on my blog hosting reviews and giveaways. These are a ton of fun to do! I like to write about the talented people of Etsy. In return they often give me exclusive coupon codes for my blog readers. The blog is constantly growing and changing. Today I'm working on a template for a small envelope to share with my readers. I'm making these envelopes myself for a baby shower favor. I'd like to be able to do this sort of thing for my readers more often.

I create custom birth announcements, nursery art and family tree prints. Many of these are now available as print-your-own.

Where do you create?

My computer is situated on my kitchen table. In the wee small hours of the morning when George won't sleep I sit here and design, blog and search for inspiration.

Where do you find your inspiration?

So many random things inspire me: song lyrics, photographs, treasuries, books, antiques, conversations...life.

How did you get started in your current line of business?

Awhile back I was selling antiques on Etsy (I'm a huge collector). I never saw myself as a craftsman. When I was pregnant with George I searched the pages of Etsy for birth announcements. One day I thought, why not make my own! I did exactly that. My dream is that someday I'll be successful enough to be able to give up my day job.

How do you promote your business?

I promote my shop on my blog moderntypography.blogspot.com/, Facebook www.facebook.com/moderntypographyblog, and on the Etsymom team website. I'm also starting to send out my product to other bloggers for review. It didn't take me long to realize that I can't do this alone, Etsy is all about relationships.

What is one of the most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?

Patience and perseverance. I just keep running the race, trusting God along the way.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Get out there and get to know not only your customers but also other shop owners. People are kind, generous and full of great advice. For instance, Jessa from littlepearlquilts introduced me to the Etsymom team.

What are some of your favorite online shops, both Etsy and non-Etsy?

This list could get very long! Non Etsy I love Amazon. On Etsy, to name a few there's Flanders Field Photography, Loft Full of Goodies, shop Gingiber, Bridechilla, little pearl quilts, Sheila Likes to Knit, Canvas Cookie Co.

I really get to see a lot of great work up close because of my blog :)

The Art of Customer Service

I am one of those people who must see, touch, smell, and taste everything that I buy. I want to know everything about it before I lay down my hard-earned money. However, online buying has made my style of shopping a thing of the past, and it still makes me nervous every time I push that "Add to Cart" button. What happens if I don’t like it? What happens if the photo wasn’t the same color? There are just
too many what ifs, but this is where great customer service steps up.

Providing great customer service gives the buyer confidence that they won’t be left high and dry. It gives a little piece of mind to help cover those "what ifs." Now, customer service does not mean free returns or refunds on custom items, but rather develops a relationship between the buyer and the shop. Below are some suggestions on how to offer outstanding customer service.

1. Make Contact! Contact every buyer who makes a purchase in the shop. Confirm the order, provide a production timeline, and give an approximate shipping date. This allows you to establish a working relationship with the buyer.

2. Provide shipping information. For every order, provide the tracking information into Paypal. Paypal will then alert the buyer with the shipping information. Everyone likes to know that their package is on the way.

3. Follow up. A few days after you know the package has arrived, send a convo to follow up and confirm the order has arrived and has met the buyer's expectations. Then, encourage the buyer to report feedback regarding their order.

4. Establish store policies. Clearly defined store policies will help to keep things running smoothly. Discuss your policies regarding returns, custom orders, and shipping. Think about the questions you would ask as a customer, and then make sure your policies answer those.

Great customer service helps your buyers feel confident purchasing from you and ensures their happiness and satisfaction. Hopefully they will then return as a repeat customer or recommend you to their friends!

Reusable Sandwich Bags

Get ready for a delightful summer picnic in the park with these reusable sandwich bags! Made from oilcloth, these bags are easy and fun to whip up in a variety of fun, summery prints.

Finding your oilcloth

Oilcloth is also called woven PUL fabric (polyurethane laminated fabric). Though it looks like a thick vinyl, you’ll notice that the back side of oilcloth fabric is woven rather than having the smooth feel of the front.

My local quilt shop sells large bolts of oilcloth for around $9 per yard, and I’ve also purchased it from Oilcloth Addict on Etsy. Fabric designers have really jumped on board with the oilcloth trend, so you’ll find laminated fabrics from Anna Maria Horner (including the new LouLouThi collection) as well as designer prints by Amy Butler, Jennifer Paganelli, and others, though the prices are higher. If you shop online for project materials, just make sure you don’t order flannel-backed fabric, which is harder to clean.

For this tutorial, you can make 6 sandwich bags from a half-yard of oilcloth, making your cost as low as .75 cents per bag. Just think of how much money you could save on plastic baggies over time! Once sewn, these durable snack bags are easy to rinse out in the sink and air dry.

Oilcloth Sandwich Bags Tutorial
Finished size: 6.5″ x 7″ folded

You’ll need:
* 1/2 yard of oilcloth (makes 6 bags) or a fat quarter (makes 3 bags)
* Velcro, .75″ wide
* White or coordinating thread
* Glue stick
* Ruler and scissors or rotary cutter
* Sewing machine with zig-zag and blanket stitches

Steps:

1. Each bag is made from a cut of oilcloth that is 16.25 inches x 7 inches. Using your rotary cutter and ruler, measure and cut your six pieces as shown in the diagram. The scraps can be saved for decoration or a 5-inch wide snack bag.

This is what your bag will look like unfolded, along with measurements.

 

2. Take your oilcloth rectangle, and place it in front of you with the pattern facing down. Fold up the bottom 6.5″ and crease with your fingers. (When folded, the bag is 9.5″ tall, including the opened flap, which is 3″.) Now, fold down the top flap like an envelope, and crease.

3. Cut a 3-inch strip of velcro, and separate the fuzzy and scratchy sides. Lightly apply glue stick to adhere each velcro strip in place.

* Attach the rough velcro .5″ down from what is now the top of the flap (attach to WRONG side of oilcloth).
* Attach the fuzzy velcro strip 1.75″ from top of opened pocket (RIGHT side of oilcloth) with glue stick. (Refer to diagrams above for velcro placement.)

4. Open up the folded flap and straight stitch both velcro strips on with your sewing machine, turning at the corners and sewing all the way around. Since the velcro may slip, hold with your fingers and tackle the patterned side of the oilcloth first.

5. To add a monogram, simply create a large letter in a Word document, choose your font, and print. (For the “S” and “J,” I used Arial Black, size 320, and applied an outline to the font to waste less ink.) Place your printout on top of oilcloth and cut through both layers using sharp scissors. Use a craft knife if you have a letter with small circles.

 

6. Apply monogram to outside of bag with a glue stick (use sparingly). Zig-zag stitch the letter applique to what will become the outside of your bag, to either the front or the back. The applique will slide out of place on the patterned side, so stitch this piece first and hold it in place while sewing. I added long strips of oilcloth as accents.

7. Refold the sandwich bag using the creases from earlier (top flap remains open for now), and hold in place with a paper clip on the fold.

8. With the monogram and velcro now attached, it’s time to turn your oilcloth into a sandwich pouch. Set your sewing machine to a wide blanket stitch and test out on a scrap piece of fabric or paper. (If you need a guide, aim for stitches that are about 1/4″ long and 3/8″ apart. I used my sewing machine’s widest stitch.)

Begin to blanket stitch the bag together, starting where the wrong sides meet on the right side. You’ll want to stitch so close to the edge that your stitches actually fall off the side of the bag and wrap around the raw edges. If your stitches catch on the oilcloth, adjust your needle position a bit to the right. Continue the blanket stitch around all four sides of the bag, including the opened flap. (For the flap, you’ll be sewing through a single layer of oilcloth, so this is merely decorative).

Note: If you are planning to spend all day in the sun with your picnic fare, keep your sandwich bags in the shade to avoid emitting any non-safe chemicals into your food. As a general rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t want to heat it up in a microwave, don’t let it bake in the sun. This sandwich sized bag fits pretty large slices of bread, though you can make reusable snack bags that are slightly smaller or larger, depending on your needs.

Is oilcloth food-safe? There is a lot of discussion about oilcloth and food, and you can find more resources and a lengthy discussion on the topic at CraftStylish and Mothering. One alternative is to cover regular fabric in layers of natural beeswax. Another idea is to line fabric with thick, resealable Ziploc bags.

Tell us about yourself.

We are a mother (Pam) and daughter (Katie) team that live in a small town in Western
Pennsylvania. We both have degrees in education. I recently retired to spend more time on our business. My daughter has two children and is still teaching. We are self-taught artists and for many years painted whimsical designs on chairs and other wood objects. Our work was in several galleries and we did quite well.

What do you create in your Etsy shop?

We offer hand-dyed and hand-painted children's clothing and shoes. I hand dye all the clothing, and we both do the painting. We each have different styles so there is something for everyone. We use a variety of methods: silk screen, wood blocks, stamping, and hand painting.

How did you get started in your line of business?

Four years ago my daughter was trying to find an Easter outfit for her little girl and couldn't find something she liked. So, she painted a shirt and shoes with cute little bunnies. I was so impressed that we decided to try textile art instead of what we were doing. We decided to go into business together and that's how BoyGirlBoyGirlDesigns came to be.

Tell us a bit about your creative process?

Everything starts with the dyeing of the clothing. I love this part. It's very meditative for me. We see all our items as blank canvases just waiting for our ideas to be transformed into wearable art. My daughter is amazing at coming up with ideas. I keep a journal with me at all times so that I can capture an idea or design on paper at any time. We run designs past each other, sketch them on paper, and then go to it on the clothing.

Where to you get your inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere if you choose to see it. My studio walls are covered in pictures of designs that I find in magazines, my sketches over the many years of my doing art, etc. It's a great visual and very inspirational. I have lots of design books, textile art books, dyeing books, and DVDs to stimulate my creativity. Our biggest inspiration, though, comes from the children who wear our clothes. When we hear from our customers that the kids don't want to take the shoes or shirts off...well, that keeps us going. We love to make them smile.

What’s your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

Right now I love the Boo Shoes. They always put a smile on my face.

Where do you promote your work?

Most of our sales are local. We do all major craft shows, the local farmer's market, and home parties, and of course we hand out our business card, which has our Etsy shop address on it. It is our only website. Word of mouth is great for us, and we have a lot of repeat customers locally. We also do all the social media sites.

What’s one of the most important lessons you’ve learned since starting your Etsy shop?

You must absolutely believe in yourself and your art. If you don't believe in yourself, why would anyone else? My mantra has always been: "If I can sell one, I can sell two." I know it is hard some days, but when we sold our first item I knew we were on our way. And when the first person told me their little one wouldn't take their shoes off...bingo...double joy!

What advice would you give to someone starting out?

Trust your instincts. In the beginning, I had so many people tell me what I should do. Many thought I should do adult clothing. Big mistake, as my heart wasn't in it. I wasted a lot of money on clothing and it bombed. Stick to what you love and if it doesn't feel right, take a really long look at it before you decide.

I've been married 3.5 years and am the mom of a 19 month-old girl and 4 month-old boy. I've always loved to dream up ideas and then create those things.

What makes you unique?

Both my grandmas loved to sew and crochet, but I'm the only grandchild on either side that really does it anymore. And I'm definitely the only one who sells what I make! I like to think that I'm carrying on their legacy.

What do you love about kids?

It's incredible to watch them learn and grow and love. It helps me to learn and grow and love as well.

What are you currently doing besides your shop crafts?

I coordinate monthly activities for the ladies in my neighborhood, I run websites/blogs, I care for my two babies and husband and I try to keep up with everything!

My babies are a huge inspiration. I also like to find inspiration in current fashion styles as well as classic, long-lived trends.

I've been sewing and crocheting to make things that I want since I was a little girl. If I see something in the store and think "I can make that," then I usually do.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Buy something from another shop before you sell. This lets you be on the customer’s side, and will make you a better shop owner with that awareness.

Taking Etsy to the Streets: Boutique Selling

You are a pro at marketing yourself on-line and on Etsy, but are you intimidated or unsure how to tap your local market? Here is a 10-step guide to bringing your Etsy business into storefronts. Please share your success stories with me at rgrady@travelingtotshop.com or on our Public Forum so we can celebrate our EtsyMoms’ successes. Have fun!

1. Peruse local publications, i.e. family magazines (often available at your local library, gyms, or doctor’s offices), shopping blogs, yellow pages.

2. Do the footwork. Visit stores you think will be a good fit for your products to see if you think our products have the same “look” as that store. This can easily be done in conjunction with other errands and trips out and about your town. Just peek in stores that look like “you”. Sometimes a store will be nothing like “you” but that might help - use your judgment.

3. If you sell at local craft shows or markets, talk to other sellers. Ask experienced sellers if there are any stores they recommend for your products. Then approach those stores.

4. Develop a written list of stores or just save business cards in a file/your smartphone; include the following info: Store name, Mailing Address, Phone Number(s), Email address, Website, ontact names you may have gained from your store visits, Hours of Operation (very helpful for planning your sales visit), Date(s) of your Visit(s) to the store. Now you have a list of stores you want to approach, what is next?

5. Dress the part, if possible! Wear something that makes you feel confident! Bring a sample of EVERY product or piece you are going to talk about. Or fabulous pictures if your products are one-of-a-kind and not portable.

6. Have a list of products and pricing. Include order quantity minimums and billing information. Discuss billing – (do you want them to pay you on the spot or will you bill them?) You can easily create a custom order in Etsy and bill them this way.

7. Be yourself! Start your visit with a quick (30 seconds) background of how great you and your products are; what is unique about you?

8. Check back with a store every quarter if they did not buy from you the first time. There
could be new owners or the shop may change their mind.

9. If they do not place an order, consider leaving a sample if you think they are on the fence and may just need to cozy up with one of your products to want to buy it.

10. Immediately following your meeting, jot down some notes about every person you met, you might find it helpful to have a separate folder for these notes depending on how

many stores you frequent or use your smartphone to keep these notes. Ex. Names of each person, short physical description if that helps you remember people, pricing you discussed, bold dates you promised product by or discussed following up by.

Congratulations! That is all it takes! Judging from the way you are selling on Etsy, you will have no problem marketing your items to local stores. And of course, it never hurts to mention the EtsyMom team if you feel so inclined. We are, after all, in this together!

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Shannon, I'm 28 years old, and I am a mom to my 4-year-old daughter and 9-month-old son. I have been married to my wonderful husband for almost 5 years and together for 8 1/2. I have been sewing since I was about 12 years old and my mom taught me everything I know. I live in Minnesota where the weather is very unpredictable, so staying inside sewing and playing with my kids works well. :)

What do you create/offer in your Etsy shop?

I make things for babies and new mommies. I have nursing covers and organic nursing pads for new moms and I also use them myself. I just recently added crochet baby hats and blankets to my shop. I am working on some sweaters and christening gowns that will be coming soon!!

How did you get started in your line of business?

I have been sewing for a long time, about 16 years, and I could only make so many things before my sewing room was piling up with finished projects and no one to give them to. I searched online and stumbled upon Etsy and decided it would be a great way to keep my hobby going and make a little money in the process.

Describe your creative process.

My creative mind comes and goes. I try to make different things and try them out in my shop here and there. I find that I get bored making the same things over and over again so I like to have a shop with a lot of variety in it. I usually begin by making something for one of my children, and then trying it out on them. If I love it, I make more for my shop.

Where do you find your inspiration?

My inspiration definitely comes from my own children. I love making things for them!! They are in a way my guinea pigs. :) I love to make gifts for my friends' children, too, so all of the babies in my life inspire me to make more things for my shop and share my love with everyone who comes to visit. :) My items I make for moms came from trying to find a nursing cover that would work well for me and never finding one. I found that the nursing covers in the stores offered little coverage on the top and also weren't made very well to view your baby. So...I created my own with a lot of coverage and boning in the top so you can see your baby easily at all times. I find that if I can't find what I am looking for, I make my own.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

My favorite item in my shop right now is my Crochet Giraffe Hat! It matches the theme of my shop and I just love giraffes!

How do you promote your work?

I promote my work on my Facebook fan page, Twitter, my Blog, and an occasional email to my friends and family. I was also recently contacted by a boutique up north in Superior, WI and they now carry some of my items as well. Very exciting for me!!

What is one of your most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?

You need to make a slotted time for crafts so you have plenty of time for your family. I felt too overwhelmed when I first started my shop trying to make enough inventory to fill it, but then I felt like my family time suffered. I think if I were to do it over again I would make a bunch of items and stockpile them, and then open my shop when I had the things to list ready to go. I put too much pressure on myself to sew, sew, sew in the beginning, and I have since had a few times where I need to step away from my shop for a few days and come back refreshed with new ideas.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Make your inventory for your shop before you open and then list a few things each day. Don't open your shop without enough things to list, you will feel overwhelmed!! Also, be very patient. Etsy is a large website with a lot of very talented people selling beautiful items. They will find you. Just stay positive. :)

Tell us about yourself:

I'm a married mom with two little ones. Sophia is 7 and Jacob is 3.I am an art education and fine arts graduate from Purdue University. After school I worked and taught at a ceramic studio in Crystal Lake, IL. After 8 years we moved back to Fort Wayne, IN where we are both from.
Shortly after our move our daughter Sophia was diagnosed with bilateral renal cancer. After a year of chemo, surgery and radiation treatments she has been cancer free for two years. However, because of this cancer being rare she was tested for a genetic link. Unfortunately both of my children have Beckwith Weideman Syndrome. So now my son is tested regularly for the same cancer associated with this syndrome.
Recently my son was diagnosed with Aspberger's. To say the least my creative ventures were put on hold for a while. Recently I put some of my work in a consignment store in St. Joe, IN called The Big Red Barn. There I also sell silk paintings, hankie pillows, bookmarks, shawl pins and soon knitting stitch markers and oil cloth rugs.
I just got my Etsy store started in March and my Facebook page in May. I hope to get a blog up soon too. I try to squeeze in as much time as I can to create. It helps me focus on other things than the kids being sick and an outlet for myself.

What makes you unique?
I learned a way to knit with wire and have adapted it to suit me and what I want to create. However if you hand me knitting needles and yarn and ask me to knit I wouldn't know where to start! I have looked through knitting with wire books and instructions and I mine is definitely not done the same way! Definitely unique!. I also consider myself a bit of a versatile artist. I have done a lot in many mediums throughout my life. Ceramics, painting, silk painting, drawing, jewelry, printmaking and sewing.

What do you love about kids?
Everyday is an adventure. You never know what the day will bring. But everyday with my two brings about amazement, happiness, love and a pinch of the silly's.

Right now hand knitted fine silver jewelry and also some beaded pieces. I hope to have so much more in the future.

Where do you create?
I have an office, but I also like to knit in the family room while enjoying some of my favorite TV shows after the kids have gone to bed.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I try to take everything in. if i see something that inspires me I tear it out of a magazine, or draw it when the thought is there. I try not to be afraid to try new things, sometimes the "mistake" leads you to the next adventure. I also go with my gut to create a variety of unique pieces that I know would please others to wear.

How did you get started in your current line of business?
My mother in law asked me last fall if I could make some art work for her new store. Here I am now trying it on my own. Who knew all I needed was that little nudge. Now I can't seem to stop! :)

How do you promote your business?
Right now thru The Big Red Barn, here on Etsy and Facebook, A blog - Creative Art by Me.

What is one of the most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?
Don't give up and try, try again.
Take advice even if it wouldn't have been the way you would have done it yourself.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?
Not sure I can answer this, I have so much to learn and really could use the advice myself. Please feel free to give it , good blogs? What should I do to my shop? No really, email mail me some suggestions! :)

Emily Balivet, Imagine Studio on Etsy and I shop many jewelry findings stores online, like Rio Grande jewelry and Fire mountain Gems and beads.

Tell us about yourself:

A little bit about myself: I am a stay at home mom, who rarely stays at home. I love being outdoors with my amazing family of three kids and my husband. My perfect day would be sitting in the mountains in a well lighted cabin reading all day.
Living in Colorado, I have the best places to explore via hiking and sightseeing. We are now on summer break and ready for new adventures!
I am thrilled beyond words that my dream of owning my own "shop" and selling my products has come true.

What makes you unique?

I am very creative, and I often have "Martha Stewart" moments where I wake up in the middle of the night with new ideas. I have to keep a notebook on my end table to write these ideas and projects down that come from nowhere.

What do you love about kids?
The best part of being around kids all day is their sense of humor. I seriously laugh all day! My kids are 11, 9, and 3 so there are many laughable moments.

What are you currently doing besides your shop crafts?

Besides running my Etsy shop, I love photography and scrapbooking. I keep my camera with me all of the time as I try to accomplish the photo a day project.

What do you offer in your etsy shop?
I offer custom and decorative products for the home, using wooden blocks and boards, stoneware mugs and plates that are personalized and embellished with vinyl. I also offer vinyl words, quotes and designs that can be directly applied to the wall for a beautiful hand painted look. My biggest seller is my Personalized Birthday Plates that can be either glass or melamine. The plates are personalized with the child's name and their birthday and can be used year after year to celebrate their special day.

Where do you create?

I typically create in my loft. This room has been a daycare room, a library, a computer room and is now officially my mom cave! I can often be found designing on one computer, blog hopping on another, and facebooking on the third computer. I try really hard to keep my workspace organized and clean, but that isn't usually the case. I also love being out in the garage where I cut, sand, and paint all of the wood I use for my signs and blocks. I am a women who loves her power tools!

Where do you find your inspiration?

My inspirations come from shabby chic and cottage magazines and blogs. I love the look of weathered wood, and can visualize so many great products just by seeing a pile of wood in someone's driveway. My children love giving me their ideas on what I should make next. The birthday plates were an idea from my 11 year old daughter!

How did you get started in your current line of business?

When I purchased my Silhouette SD and realized all of the awesome things I could create with vinyl, I decided to start up my own business. I had, and still have, a fabulous mentor, who is also in the vinyl lettering business. We shoot ideas back and forth all of the time. I recently purchased a larger, 24 inch, vinyl plotter, so look out for some new, large products. I started very small, and have increased my inventory, and now I have almost daily sales!

How do you promote your business?

Facebook is my number one way of promoting my business. I also receive referrals from previous buyers, as well as from friends. Word of mouth and networking is huge in the crafting world. I would love to get a blog started up for my business but honestly, where would I find the time to do that?

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

The best advice I would give to someone just starting out, is just do it! Take the plunge and enjoy what you do. If you have passion in your products it will show, and they will sell.

What is one of the most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?
The most important lessons I have learned since starting my own business is to communicate with your buyers. When I create a customized product for someone, even through email and convo's, I try to get to know the buyer. What do colors do they like, what is their style, and so on. I feel like I have friends all over the world that I will probably never meet, just by conversations that we have.

Meet this month's EMCA winner - Jill of MaiseysDaiseys!

Tell us about yourself

"Never a dull moment" would be a spot on description of me! From the moment I wake in the morning, until I finally drag myself into bed, I am on the run all day long! When I am not chauffeuring, cooking, or cleaning, my mornings and early afternoons are spent working as the office manager for my husband's advertising agency, and in the late afternoons and evenings I focus on Maisey's Daisey's. When I do take time out for myself, you can usually find me out running on the mountain roads of Park City taking in the beautiful scenery. I love it here!

What makes you unique?

Probably my ability to take what seems like an quirky, impossible idea, and turn it into a reality. I love to see my ideas come to fruition. I have created some pretty unusual stuff that I have even surprised myself! But that probably doesn't really make me unique... I'm sure lots of people are able to do that.

What do you love about kids?

Their innocence, their eagerness to learn and I hearing them laugh! Nothing makes me happier than to hear my own children really having a good belly laugh!

What are you currently doing besides your shop crafts?

Training for my 15th marathon, and really hoping that my knees will hang in there with me!

What do you offer in your etsy shop?

Paper mache daisy headbands and hair clips in all shapes and sizes, paper mache jewelry, daisy bracelets, small, medium and large paper mache flowers for room and party decor & our "Maisey" doll who comes complete with her own paper mache hair clips to share.

Where do you create?

A better question would be "Where don't I create?" I have worked in almost every room in my house, outside in my yard and anywhere that I go on vacation. That's the nice thing about our product - it's totally portable! But my favorite place is probably our family room where everyone hangs out. Even though I am working, we are still together as a family.

Where do you find your inspiration?

My inspiration comes from my daughters and the things they are involved in, from nature and things I see when I am out running, even something as simple as a glance through a magazine can spark some really great ideas.

How did you get started in your current line of business?

MaiseysDaiseys was really created by my daughter Macy four years ago when she was eight years old. She was bored one afternoon, and decided to pull out her bead box and make some jewelry. He friends and family loved it so much, she started making items for them. She was then asked to sell her jewelry at her school's art festival. On a whim, we decided to make some paper mache flowers as a table decoration for her booth and much to our surprise, people wanted to buy those too! Our next thought was why not try the flowers on a headband? And now here we are, selling in markets and festivals, boutiques and online!

How do you promote your business?

Macy and her sister Carter wearing the headbands wherever they go is our best promotional tool! They are always asked where they got them, and their friends have ended up being some of our greatest customers and have really helped to spread the word! And of course blogging, Facebook & Twitter are really great tools. I also apply to as many shows as I can to get our product out there and seen by the public.

What is one of the most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?

You have to love what you do and believe in your product - then everyone else will too!

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Don't get discouraged - you have to accept the fact that you will have good days and bad days. If you love what you do, with a little hard work, you will succeed.

What are some of your favorite online shops, both etsy and non-etsy?

A few of my Etsy favorites are goodbyebluemonday - her dolls are fabulous! Mama Gourds sculptures are fantastic, and Glad Dog by Lizzy Clara's illustrations are simple and so sweet! Nest Pretty Things Kids makes fantastic jewelry, and Junker Jane just really cracks me up! Her dolls and paintings are so unusual, you can't help but love them!

My non-etsy favorites would be Uncommon Goods, Garnet Hill and Crate & Barrel - I love housewares :)

Hello and happy April, everyone! Spring is almost here (from what they tell us, anyway) and we’re excited to show you what we have going on with the team this month. First, we have a couple of announcements to make.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce Kimberly (cinnamonspice) is stepping down as co-leader of the team. She is still staying on as a moderator and co-head of the Special Events committee. Alice (lilprincessbow) has also decided to step down as moderator and co-head of the Welcome committee.

After much deliberation and discussion, we would like to welcome Jennifer (LavenderAve) as co-leader. She will continue to lead the EMCA/Gift Guide committee along with her new responsibilities as co-leader. We would also like to welcome Tammy (HotLavaClothing) as a new moderator and co-head of the Welcome committee, replacing Alice. You may have already seen our other new moderator helping out with the EMCA committee. Make sure to say hello to Meg (BeachsideTreasures), as well! Special Events

During the months of March and April, EtsyMoms came together to raise money for two different charities. A number of EtsyMoms donated proceeds from their Etsy sales to support Japan's recovery effort in the wake of the recent natural disasters there. From April 1st to April 7th we held our second charity auction on our newly created auction site: http://etsymomauctions.blogspot.com/. A couple of months ago, team leaders learned that one of our longstanding members was experiencing an extremely difficult financial situation, and we wanted to assist her. We are so thankful to those who contributed some of their finely handcrafted items for this event, and to everyone who helped the auction run smoothly. We raised $70 for our team member!

**Our next event will be a team sale in July in conjunction with Etsy's 4th annual Christmas in July sale.

The Art of Tagging!

On Etsy tagging is essential for success! You get 14 words to optimize your search ability, so make sure you use them!

Personally, I am horrible at tagging my listings. I can’t think outside the box, and more often than not I end up with the same seven tags and just leave the rest blank. Aware that I was not fully utilizing each listing, I vowed to improve my tagging skills for 2011. Through trial and error and vast amounts of research, I am sharing my new admittedly limited knowledge in the hopes that you can benefit.

Main Category

Is your listing considered vintage? Are you listing crafting supplies? If your item fits into two categories, pick the one that best targets your shopper. Look at your listing title; this should be your jumping off point.

The 13 Other Tags: Some Suggestions

By answering some basic questions (see below) you should be able to come up with enough keywords to fill in most of your remaining tags.

What is your item?
What is the main material used?
What is the main color?
Where will it be used?
Size?
Age group?
Style?
Shape?
Techniques used?
Does it correspond with a holiday?
Do you belong to a team?

In my shop I make tutu costumes sets, so I would use the following words to tag my Rainbow Clown Costume: children, clothing, costume, tutu, tulle, clown, circus, birthday, girl, dress up, Halloween, pretend play, Etsymom, sewn

A Beginner’s Guide to Facebook Insights

Like many Etsy sellers, you now have a Facebook page for your shop, having read in the forums and in several blogs that having a Facebook page is a great way to advertise as well as interact with your customers and other sellers. But do you ever find yourself asking, "Now what?" How do you really know if your Facebook page is effective? Is it engaging your customers? Is anyone actually looking at your wall posts? Facebook can actually help answer these and many other questions with a tool they call "Facebook Insights."

As defined by Facebook, "Insights provides page owners with metrics around their content. By understanding and analyzing trends within user growth and demographics, consumption of content, and creation of content, page owners…are better equipped to improve their business and create better experiences on Facebook."

You can get to the Insights Dashboard by clicking on "View Insights" at the right hand side of your page. (Note that you need to be an administrator of your page and have at least 30 likers to view insights.)

The data on the Insights Dashboard is broken down into two types: Users and Interactions.

User Insights

This shows the total page likes, new likes, and active users per day. An active user is any person who has interacted or viewed your page or your posts.

Click on "See Details" to view even more detailed information including data on new likes and (*gasp*) unlikes per day, liker demographics (gender, age, countries, and so on), page views and unique page views, tab views, external referrers, and media consumption (i.e., how many people actually clicked on the photo or video you posted on your wall).

Interactions Insights

This section shows information on all feedback or interactions on your page. "Post Views" displays the number of times likers viewed a story posted by your page on their News Feed, while "Post Feedback" shows the number of likes and comments for your posts. Click on "See Details" to get information on the number of users who unsubscribe to your page per day.

Most of the data on Facebook Insights are presented in graphs that show daily numbers either for the past week—as shown in the pictures above—or for the past month. Both User Insights and Interactions Insights provide valuable facts and figures on the people you interact with daily. These insights can help you identify how to use your Facebook page more effectively for your business.

Question: What are some traditions I can start with my family this Easter?

Answer: Easter can be more than just dying eggs and buying a new dress for church. Here are some ideas for new traditions to start with your family this holiday.

Make a lamb cake with your kids using a cake pan form and coconut. My great grandma used to do this every year, and I still remember them.

Go for a drive or a walk as a family. Search out objects that are shaped like a cross.

Head to a petting zoo and check out the bunnies and lambs.

Bring some lilies to a nursing home or hospital.

Make a sacrifice of some kind: pay for the person's order behind you in line, buy an Easter dress or outfit and donate it to a local shelter, or donate Easter baskets to a Women's shelter.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, my name is Susan, and I'm a wife to a fab husband, and a mom to one daughter and an energetic dog. Who am I kidding, I'm a mom to the three of them!

I was born and raised in New York, moved to Pennsylvania, and for the past three years now reside in the Wilmington, NC area. I just love it here! My husband and I chose this coastal area specifically for its lovely beaches. Although we can't afford to live on the beach, it's literally a mere 15 minutes away with no horrible beach traffic ride home afterward.

I have been creating and taking pictures my whole life. I sew, garden, love to cook and I'm a reality show TV junkie! And believe it or not, I work a 40-hour week in an Ophthalmology practice. You may wonder when I have time to make any jewelry. I get time anxiety about that myself.

What do you create/offer in your Etsy shop?

The majority of my work is ocean and nature inspired; however, I do add some glitz and glam pieces for special occasions or holidays, and I have made some beach wedding necklaces and earrings for friends here.

How did you get started in your line of business?

I had never heard of Etsy before moving here. Then one day a complete stranger complimented my beachy necklace I was wearing out to dinner and asked me if I sold my jewelry on Etsy. When I got home I went online to Etsy and wowee, wow, wow, wow. Such beautiful things to look at and so many talented people. I joined and started buying the most beautiful of beads and findings. Items I never saw in any of the big chain craft stores. It was heaven! Thank goodness I had a job, because I was addicted! After making a ton of stuff and selling to the girls I work with, I took the plunge (knowing it would be time consuming) and opened my shop, another baby, OceanaireDreamer.

Describe your creative process.

Thank goodness I'm an early riser, it gives me time before I go to work to lay out beads and think of ideas or at least start a piece. I am lucky to have a workroom with a large table. Most of my creating is done on the weekend. I get up as early as I do during the week, while everyone is still sleeping and I'm not needed. However, I can't take photos until the sun comes up, and even then there's only one time in the a.m. and one in the afternoon that's good for lighting. I use natural light, not a flash or lightbox. I try to add my new items during the weekend, too. I try to think when a lot of people would be online shopping.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I am sometimes inspired by a movie—Eat, Pray, Love was one, the Twilight movie series another.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

My favorite piece in my shop right now is my Seahorse and Anemone necklace. I adore seahorses, and I've combined this lil’ fellow with a locally found shell and a glass "flower" bauble. It is super beachy!

How do you promote your work?

Since spare time is my nemesis, I don't blog or twitter. I do upload pictures to Flickr, www.flickr.com/photos/oceanairejewelry.

I only have a personal Facebook page, but I only share my pieces with my friends once in a while. I don't want to start bombarding them.

I also share new pieces on StumbleUpon.

I have found that the best promotion for me has been doing local craft shows. I get a lot of sales, and my business cards get picked up like crazy. I have even been invited to other craft shows from this. Right now I'm set up for the Kure Beach Street Fair, the Hanover Center Arts & Crafts Day, and the Burgaw Blueberry Festival. There are a couple more toward the end of summer I'll be applying for, too!

What is one of your most important lessons you've learned since starting your business?

Business can be slow here on Etsy, as there are so many talented people, but one thing I learned is patience. Just when you're ready to close up shop, you get a sale and a compliment. The funny thing I've noticed, for me, is that it may not be what I like the best that gets sold, nor the newest item.

I have started using coupon codes for return customers, and that has worked a bit thus far.

I also always keep lines of communication open with the buyer. I convo them thanking them for the purchase and I convo or email them when I've shipped their purchase out! It's more of a personal touch. I know I appreciate it as a buyer. And besides, you never know who could stumble across your shop. It could be a celebrity, a stylist, a magazine, or a boutique in some swanky shopping area that wants to carry some of your pieces. You just never know.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Art is so subjective! Not everyone is going to love your work, but a lot of people will. Just keep creating and get it out there. It's very important that you love what you are doing and you are passionate about it! That's it!
